Aug 8, 2015 - The receiver is stamped Remington 1917. The serial number is in the 144000 range. Can anyone tell me a price range for this rifle? The M1917 Enfield, the 'American Enfield' (frequently misidentified or mislabeled as the 'P17', 'P1917', or 'Pattern 1917'), formally named 'United States Rifle, cal.30, Model of 1917' was an American modification and production of the British.303 caliber P14 rifle developed and manufactured during the period 1917-1918.
I recently bought a Remington 1917 30-06. The stock is Winchester and I guess called Sporterized due to the stock being shorter. As you can see from the pictures, some one drilled and tapped for a scope thus messing up the serial number. However, there is an engraved number on the left side (see Pic) this confuses me as to what and why. As far as I can tell, it was made between 1917 to 1919. Is there anything else you can tell me about this rifle?
I paid 250.00 for it. Really nice shape and clean bore. Its going to get a nicer scope and will be my new deer gun.
But I'm curious about the engraved numbers. It had a small Weaver scope '29S Special Scope' which looks to be a small caliber scope. Any info would be appreciated. Although I haven't yet fired it I'm in love with it.
Good solid American gun. With all those holes drilled in the front receiver ring it looks like a mad woodpecker went to town on it π π Value is right at what you paid.
I am not sure what the hand engraved numbers could mean. It does not look like any kind of number combination I have seen before. The one thing I am as certain of as anything is that they were not used in conjunction with military service - at least not in context of the government putting them on there.

Let me mention one thing in passing and that is the original serial number which clearly has been altered. I'll cite the law below. Please note that there is no time requirement of when it was done or who did the removal or alteration. Would a law enforcement officer ever give you a hassle over this issue? I don't know, probably not unless they were digging hard to make a case against you for something. Could they legally/technically - most certainly. 27 CFR 478.34 - Removed, obliterated, or altered serial number.
Β§ 478.34 Removed, obliterated, or altered serial number. No person shall knowingly transport, ship, or receive in interstate or foreign commerce any firearm which has had the importer's or manufacturer's serial number removed, obliterated, or altered, or possess or receive any firearm which has had the importer's or manufacturer's serial number removed, obliterated, or altered and has, at any time, been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce. ATF-313, 56 FR 32508, July 17, 1991]. Thanks, I appreciate it. Yea it looks like some backyard gunsmith goofed trying to drill and tap mounts.
Dvd lab pro serial number. Made four holes instead of two, and as you mention, altered the serial number. I plan on keeping the rifle and hopefully use it for big game. Trying to figure out the scope lugs right now. It came with a Weaver 29S Special scope that looks to belong on a BB gun. Going to be a challenge and no way can it be drilled and tapped again. I like the old guns and thought it would be a decent rifle.
Bore is clean and still sharp after all this time. Would there possibly be another serial number, say on the underside of the barrel?
That does concern me as to it being altered but I intend to keep it. DennisF - It 'technically' would not matter if it had another serial number on it. The receiver serial number is considered *IT*. And if you read the law carefully it does not mention what or which one (SN), only that no serial number may be altered or removed. I don't want to worry you about this topic needlessly. Just make you aware of it.
Most law enforcement officers working the streets would most likely never even know about it. And a scope base mounted up there would most probably cover up some or all of the numbers anyway. The reason I mention it at all is that I am aware of a situation where something similar happened with a serial number. For one reason or another the owner of the firearm came to the attention of law enforcement and was charged (Original reason for being looked at was not a firearms violation). So this law is out there. However as far as I know it is virtually never used by itself as a primary charge. There is or has always been another reason for the person being looked at, and then this was a secondary charge (with the exception previously noted and the obvious example of gang members found in possession of firearms with removed - by intent - serial numbers.
